Pokémon GO Launches Global Raid Map

Niantic just launched a new online map for Pokémon GO, letting players find active Raids and Gyms in the real world to better coordinate with friends. The feature release comes ahead of the global Pokémon GO Tour: Kalos and as The Pokémon Company unveiled two new franchise games, "Pokémon Winds" and "Pokémon Waves."

The new map feature is an official, in-house version of a service Pokémon GO players have relied on third-party and community-driven platforms to provide for years. Fan-made resources like The Silph Road, PoGoMap, and PokeGenie previously filled the gap for coordinating Raids, often leveraging Discord communities and dedicated websites. This functionality is integrated into Niantic's social app, Campfire, which layers over its portfolio of games. The app includes features like "Flares" to signal interest in a location to other players and a "Team Up" function to build a raid party directly, centralizing user coordination that was previously fragmented across many platforms. The raid map is more than a player-facing tool; it's part of Niantic's broader strategy to build a persistent, 3D map of the world. This is powered by the company's Visual Positioning System (VPS) and crowdsourced scans from players at real-world locations, enabling centimeter-accurate AR experiences. In a major market shift, Niantic's games division, including Pokémon GO and the Campfire platform, was acquired by Scopely in a deal valued at $3.5 billion, which closed in May 2025. This acquisition places the highly profitable game under new ownership while signaling a strategic pivot for Niantic's original team. Following the acquisition, Niantic's founder John Hanke spun off the underlying geospatial technology into a new entity, Niantic Spatial Inc. This new company will focus on enterprise applications, leveraging the vast location data collected by players to build large-scale geospatial AI models for logistics, immersive experiences, and other industries. Despite a decline from its 2016 peak of 232 million active players, Pokémon GO maintained a base of 55 million players in 2023. The game has generated over $8 billion in lifetime revenue, providing a massive dataset from the 30 billion+ miles players have collectively walked.
