Two Arrested in Long Beach for Attacking Teen

A teenager and a 19-year-old man have been arrested in Long Beach for the alleged attempted murder of a 14-year-old boy. The Los Angeles Police Department reported the incident involved pistol-whipping, but the motive for the attack remains under investigation.

The daylight attack occurred around 12:50 p.m. on a Sunday in North Long Beach. The 14-year-old victim was walking on Locust Avenue when the 14-year-old suspect allegedly approached him, pursued him on foot as he tried to flee, and fired multiple shots. After shooting the victim, the assailant then pistol-whipped him before fleeing the scene. Responding officers from the Long Beach Police Department provided immediate medical aid, including applying chest seals and a tourniquet, actions that Police Chief Wally Hebeish said "undoubtedly saved this young man's life." The boy was transported to a hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable. Within a day of the incident, police arrested the alleged 14-year-old shooter in the city of Lakewood. Also arrested was 19-year-old Jian Xavier Salas of Long Beach for his alleged involvement. Police believe Salas may have been the getaway driver. The investigation has been assigned to the LBPD's gang detectives, and police have stated that both suspects are believed to be gang-affiliated. However, a specific motive for the violent attack remains under investigation. Salas was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and being an accessory after the fact, with his bail set at $75,000. The name of the 14-year-old suspect has not been released because he is a minor. The case has been forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for consideration of filing formal charges. Under California law, attempted murder is the intent to kill someone and taking a direct step to do so. A conviction for first-degree attempted murder can result in a life sentence in state prison. Minors as young as 14 can be charged as adults for serious crimes like attempted murder under certain circumstances.
