Yann LeCun's AI Startup Secures $1B Seed

Yann LeCun's new AI startup just secured a massive $1B seed round, signaling explosive early-stage funding in the AI sector. This highlights the continued investor enthusiasm for AI and machine learning ventures, particularly those led by prominent figures in the field. It’s a good indicator of where VC money is flowing in the ML startup world.

Yann LeCun's new AI startup, Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI) Labs, secured $1.03 billion in seed funding, marking Europe's largest seed round ever. The company is valued at $3.5 billion. AMI Labs aims to build "world models," AI systems that understand the physical world, reason, and plan, unlike Large Language Models (LLMs) that primarily generate text. LeCun believes LLMs have limitations, especially in high-stakes environments like healthcare and robotics where "hallucinations" can be dangerous. The company will focus on powering businesses in robotics, manufacturing, and wearables. AMI Labs will have hubs in Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore. Alexandre LeBrun, former CEO of healthcare AI startup Nabla, will serve as CEO of AMI Labs, with LeCun as executive chair. Key hires include Mike Rabbat (VP of world models), Saining Xie (Chief Science Officer), and Pascale Fung (Chief Research and Innovation Officer), all formerly from Meta or Google DeepMind. Investors include Nvidia, Temasek, Bezos Expeditions, Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, Hiro Capital, HV Capital, Samsung, Mark Cuban, and Tim Berners-Lee. LeCun intends to open source the code and papers produced by AMI Labs. LeCun, a Turing Award winner, left his position as Chief AI Scientist at Meta to found AMI Labs. He is also a Silver Professor at NYU, affiliated with the Center for Data Science. AI startup funding is surging, with projections exceeding $200 billion in 2025. This represents nearly half of all global startup funding.
