Nursing Education Programs Embed Epic Training
Educational institutions are beginning to embed Epic EHR training directly into nursing school curricula to better prepare new clinicians. Care New England's initiative serves as a model by integrating hands-on simulations and workflow exercises into coursework. This approach aims to close the skills gap for new graduates and those transitioning into informatics roles.
- Frontline nurses frequently cite poor EHR usability, including redundant data entry, difficult navigation, and physician-centric design, as major sources of frustration and job dissatisfaction. In a recent survey, two-thirds of nurses reported that digital documentation burden contributes to their desire to leave their positions. Many nurses also feel they lack a voice in EHR changes and that system upgrades often fail to improve their workflows. - To pivot into informatics, ICU nurses can leverage their clinical expertise by pursuing certifications like the Nursing Informatics Certification (NI-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS) from HIMSS. Employers often look for experience on quality improvement initiatives or EHR implementation teams, which can serve as a practical bridge from a clinical role. - Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in critical care for predictive analytics, such as the early identification of sepsis, and to provide clinical decision support for medication dosing and ventilator settings. AI tools integrated with the EHR can analyze large datasets in real-time to highlight trends and suggest interventions, which has been shown to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce ICU stays. - Interoperability standards like HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) are crucial for sharing data between different health IT systems. FHIR uses modern web technologies to define data into modular units called "resources"—such as a patient, lab result, or medication—which allows for more flexible and efficient data exchange compared to older standards. - Federal regulations from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) mandate the use of standardized APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to promote data exchange and prevent "information blocking." These rules require hospitals to send electronic patient event notifications to other providers, which directly impacts the workflows that informatics teams must design and support. - Epic offers specific modules and features tailored to high-acuity settings, such as "The Brain" tool for inpatient nurses, which provides a timeline view of patient orders and tasks. To improve efficiency, Epic has also developed features like macros that can turn a single click into multiple rows of flowsheet documentation, though many nurses may not be aware of or fully utilize these tools without specific training.
