Megan Thee Stallion Breaks Broadway Barriers
Three-time Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion will portray Zidler in Moulin Rouge! from March 24 to May 17, becoming the first female-identifying performer in the traditionally male role. This marks her Broadway debut in an 8-week run before the show closes July 26. The groundbreaking casting continues Broadway's push toward gender-forward interpretations of classic roles.
The role of Harold Zidler, the boisterous owner of the Moulin Rouge, was originated on Broadway by Danny Burstein, who won a Tony Award for his performance. Other notable actors who have donned the top hat include Eric Anderson, Tituss Burgess, and Boy George. The character serves as the musical's high-energy ringmaster and a paternal figure to the star, Satine. Megan Thee Stallion's casting follows a recent trend of diverse and non-traditional performers taking on the role. Just before her debut, the part will be played by Bob the Drag Queen, who is in the role for an eight-week engagement through March 22. This move signals a deliberate push by the production to reinterpret the character with fresh perspectives. *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* has been a Broadway powerhouse since it opened on July 25, 2019. The production, based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, went on to win 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It also became the highest-grossing show in the 100-year history of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The show will take its final bow on July 26, 2026. By the time it closes, the musical will have played 2,265 regular performances, making it the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history. The production successfully recouped its initial $28 million investment in late 2022. While hip-hop has made a significant impact on Broadway, most notably with the musical *Hamilton*, the casting of a major female rap artist in a principal role is a significant milestone. Megan's previous acting credits include appearances in the musical film *Dicks: The Musical* and television shows like *She-Hulk: Attorney at Law* and *Good Girls*.
