India to Establish First Quantum & AI University
Andhra Pradesh's Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced a memorandum of understanding with NIELIT to establish India's first university campus dedicated to Quantum and AI. Located in Amaravati, the institution will focus on developing skills in advanced technology and semiconductors.
- This initiative is a key component of Andhra Pradesh's broader "Amaravati Quantum Valley" vision, which aims to establish a globally competitive innovation hub for next-generation technologies. - The university will be operated by the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), an autonomous scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) that has been granted the status of a Deemed-to-be University. - The MoU was officially signed on February 20, 2026, at the India AI Impact Summit, in the presence of key figures including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan. - The curriculum will be exclusively focused on advanced domains such as Quantum Computing, AI, Machine Learning, Quantum Communication, and Cybersecurity, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs. - This project aligns with India's National Quantum Mission (NQM), a government initiative launched in 2023 with a budget of over ₹6,000 crore to foster quantum technology research and development. - On the same day, the Andhra Pradesh government also announced related partnerships with the United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC) to establish a Centre of Excellence for AI and Quantum, and with IBM to skill 100,000 young people in AI and quantum technologies. - The university is part of a larger strategy to create a deep-tech ecosystem in Amaravati, integrating research labs, industry-linked Centres of Excellence, and support for startups. - NIELIT operates 56 centers across India and has a history of developing and delivering training in information technology and electronics, making it a strategic partner for specialized education in these emerging fields.
