Uganda's Kiplimo Breaks Half-Marathon Record
Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo regained the world half-marathon record in Lisbon, running 57:20 and shaving 10 seconds off the previous global best. Norway secured a golden double at the Speed Skating World Allround Championships with Sander Eitrem and Ragne Wiklund both claiming titles. Team China also won the 2026 American Cup in gymnastics with Team USA earning silver.
This was a return to the top for Jacob Kiplimo, who had previously set the world record on the same Lisbon course in 2021 with a time of 57:31. He briefly lost the title to Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha, who bettered his time by a single second in Valencia in 2024. The 25-year-old Ugandan is no stranger to elite competition, holding four World Cross Country senior titles and bronze medals in the 10,000m from both the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 World Championships. Kiplimo achieved his record-breaking run without the use of pacemakers, covering the first 5km in a blistering 13:28. The Norwegian victories at the speed skating championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands, ended significant droughts for the nation. Sander Eitrem's win was the first for a Norwegian man in the allround event since 1994, while Ragne Wiklund became the country's first female world allround champion since 1938. Eitrem secured his title by overcoming American skater Jordan Stolz in the final 10,000m race. Stolz, who had competed in the sprint championships just days earlier, faded in the demanding final event after leading the standings for the first three distances. The American Cup's return marked the debut of a mixed-gender team format, a preview of a new event set to be introduced at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The competition, held in Henderson, Nevada, was the first since 2020. Team China's victory was powered by strong individual performances in the final round, including a 14.800 on the horizontal bar from Li Hongyan. China's final score of 57.250 was a full 2.55 points ahead of the United States' 54.700.
