Apple's AI culture drag
- Internal critics say Apple's organizational setup and incentives are slowing its AI progress and feature iteration. (x.com) - Posts single out limited basic-research investment and ongoing Siri issues as concrete symptoms of that slowdown. (x.com) - Commentators warn this cultural lag is visible in public product gaps and is drawing sustained scrutiny. (youtube.com)
Apple’s struggle to ship a more capable Siri has turned an internal artificial-intelligence problem into a public product problem. (apple.com) (cnbc.com) Apple previewed a more personal Siri at Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024, saying the assistant would understand personal context, see what was on screen, and take actions across apps. On March 7, 2025, Apple said those features would take longer than expected and would roll out in 2026 instead of 2025. (apple.com) (reuters.com) The delay hit the part of Apple Intelligence that was supposed to make Siri useful as an agent, not just a chatbot. Apple said Siri already handles 1.5 billion requests a day, which raised the stakes for any rebuild of the assistant’s core software. (reuters.com) Apple reshuffled the chain of command within two weeks of the delay. Bloomberg reported on March 20, 2025, that Chief Executive Tim Cook moved Siri oversight from artificial-intelligence chief John Giannandrea to Vision Pro creator Mike Rockwell, and Rockwell later replaced much of Siri’s leadership team with managers from the Vision Pro software group. (bloomberg.com 1) (bloomberg.com 2) That reorganization fed a broader account of why Apple has lagged rivals in generative artificial intelligence. Bloomberg Businessweek reported on May 18, 2025, that Apple’s artificial-intelligence effort was slowed by fragmented leadership, caution about product risk, and weak internal urgency after the 2018 hiring of Giannandrea from Google. (bloomberg.com) Apple has kept shipping other Apple Intelligence features while the Siri overhaul slipped. At Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9, 2025, Apple announced live translation, visual intelligence updates, workout and messaging features, and access for developers to its on-device foundation model. (apple.com) Those releases did not include the Siri capabilities Apple had used to sell the bigger vision in 2024. By September 15, 2025, Apple was promoting new Apple Intelligence features that were available “today,” but the delayed Siri functions were still absent from that rollout. (apple.com 1) (apple.com 2) Apple has said little in public about the internal causes of the delay beyond saying the work is taking longer than expected. The company’s public case is that it is building artificial-intelligence features around privacy, including a cloud system that runs on Apple chips rather than standard outside infrastructure. (reuters.com) (apple.com) The scrutiny persists because Apple framed Siri as the center of its artificial-intelligence strategy, then missed the timetable on the hardest part. Until the promised assistant ships, every new Apple Intelligence release is measured against the June 2024 demo that has not yet reached users. (apple.com) (reuters.com)
