Ericsson Backs Open RAN Initiative

Ericsson has joined the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation as a founding member to advance open-source wireless network innovation. The move signals a commitment to supporting open and interoperable RAN technology under the Linux Foundation's umbrella.

The OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation is a public-private partnership that includes not only Ericsson but also other industry giants like Nokia, NVIDIA, AMD, AT&T, and Verizon. This collaboration aims to create a foundational, open-source software stack for the Centralized Unit (CU) and Distributed Unit (DU), which are key components of a modern Radio Access Network (RAN). The initiative is backed by the U.S. government's FutureG Office, highlighting its strategic importance for future wireless technology. Open RAN, in general, seeks to disaggregate the hardware and software of radio access networks, allowing for greater flexibility and competition among vendors. This approach can lead to significant cost savings, with early adopter Rakuten Mobile reporting capital expenditure reductions of up to 40% and operational expenditure savings of 30%. The goal is to move away from proprietary, single-vendor solutions that can lead to vendor lock-in. While the O-RAN Alliance has focused on developing open interface specifications, the OCUDU initiative takes a step further by aiming to create a carrier-grade, open-source software implementation of the CU and DU. This provides a common, transparent foundation that developers and researchers can build upon, potentially accelerating innovation in areas like AI-native RAN for 6G. The initial version of the OCUDU software is expected to be released in March 2026, building upon Software Radio Systems' (SRS) existing srsRAN platform. The roadmap includes a three-year development plan to expand its capabilities and align with industry standards. This phased rollout is intended to provide a stable and evolving platform for the development of next-generation wireless technologies.
