Stunning Bar Table Craftsmanship
Woodworking enthusiasts are praising Scott Dow's stunning bar table masterpiece, showcasing intricate craftsmanship that's drawing attention across social media. The detailed work demonstrates the level of artistry possible in custom furniture making.
The viral bar top, featuring a crocodile emerging from the wood, was crafted by northwestern Pennsylvania-based artist Scott Dow. A skilled chainsaw artist, Dow spent approximately 100 hours on the piece, which is made from locally sourced catalpa wood. Dow's artistic background is extensive, with experience as a bronze caster, marble and stone sculptor, furniture designer, tattoo artist, and painter. He transitioned to chainsaw carving full-time after the 2008 housing market collapse impacted the furniture industry, finding the medium offered speed and fluidity. The inspiration for the crocodile bar came from seeing a smaller carving of a fish emerging from a wood surface. Dow decided to challenge himself by taking the concept to a much larger scale, resulting in the intricate and widely shared piece of functional art. This isn't Dow's first taste of recognition; he won the US Open in 2012 and has competed in the prestigious Blockhausen Husky Cup in Germany. He has even been honored with a star on the chainsaw carving walk of fame in Germany. The crocodile table's viral moment happened after Dow's daughter posted it on Instagram, a platform he was unfamiliar with, leading to over 18 million views. He now takes commissions for his unique tables and has moved on to other ambitious projects, including a bar top featuring a snake.
