Gurez Valley in India is being promoted for border tourism with untouched landscapes, culture, and mountain views. Panama's Coiba Island is highlighted as a raw, untouched Pacific paradise for wildlife viewing. The Gurez Valley, once a stop on the ancient Silk Road connecting Kashmir to Central Asia, is gaining renewed attention. This region is home to the Dard-Shin people, an ethnolinguistic group with a distinct culture and the ancient Shina language, which is not commonly found in the rest of the Kashmir Valley. The area's main village, Dawar, was named the 'Best Tourism Village' in the gold category by India's Ministry of Tourism. Tourist numbers in Gurez have surged, climbing from just over 12,000 in 2022 to more than one lakh (100,000) in 2024. This increase is prompting the local government to consider establishing a dedicated Tourism Development Authority to manage the growth. To enhance its appeal, commercial rafting was introduced on the Kishanganga River for the first time in 2024. Panama's Coiba Island, along with 38 smaller islands, forms Coiba National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its pristine condition is largely due to its history as a penal colony for nearly a century, which kept it isolated and undeveloped. Today, 80% of the park's forests remain intact. The park is a critical part of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor, a migratory highway for marine life connecting waters with Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador. Its waters host the second-largest coral reef in the eastern Pacific and are a habitat for at least 33 species of sharks and 20 species of whales and dolphins. On land, it is home to endemic species like the Coiba Island howler monkey. The Pulwama district, often called the "Rice Bowl of Kashmir," is famed for its high-quality saffron cultivation, with vibrant purple fields blooming in the autumn. Beyond its agricultural significance, the region contains historical sites such as the 9th-century Avantishwar Temple, built by King Awanti Varma. To diversify its tourism offerings, the local administration recently took charge of facilities at offbeat sites like Shikargah and Naristan. The government is focusing on developing eco-tourism, trekking routes, and adventure activities to attract more visitors to these less-explored areas.
