Wholesale Inflation Comes in Hot

U.S. wholesale inflation was hotter than expected in January, with the Producer Price Index (PPI) showing a sharp increase. Core goods prices, excluding food and energy, jumped 0.7% for the month, raising concerns that tariffs and supply chain issues are feeding into broader consumer price inflation.

The overall Producer Price Index for final demand climbed 0.5% in January, a notable acceleration from the 0.4% registered in December and significantly outpacing economists' consensus forecast of a 0.3% rise. On a year-over-year basis, wholesale inflation now stands at 2.9%, underscoring persistent price pressures at the producer level. A deeper look into the numbers reveals that the surge was primarily fueled by the services sector, which saw prices jump 0.8% for the month—the largest increase since July 2025. In contrast, the index for final demand goods actually fell by 0.3%, largely due to a 2.7% drop in energy prices. Within the services sector, a 2.5% leap in trade services margins, which reflect the difference between the buying and selling prices for wholesalers and retailers, was a significant contributor. Prices for transportation and warehousing services also rose by a solid 1.0%. These wholesale price hikes are raising concerns about the impact of import tariffs being passed down the supply chain. The cost of key construction materials has been particularly affected, with prices for aluminum, steel, and copper having seen substantial increases over the past year, leading to delays and cancellations of new projects. The hotter-than-expected PPI data contrasts with a slightly cooler Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for the same month, which showed a year-over-year increase of 2.4%. However, because the PPI can be a leading indicator for consumer inflation, the latest figures have rattled financial markets and may influence the Federal Reserve's decisions regarding interest rates.
