Agents Move to Infrastructure

Cloud platforms are shifting from chat demos to agent runtimes that run real enterprise workflows — Cloudflare expanded its Agent Cloud as an infrastructure layer for running AI agents at scale. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business added a Slack connector and enterprise features to bring secure Slack context into chat and agent modes, signalling connectors and orchestration are being productized for business use. An artificial intelligence agent is software that can keep state, call tools, and finish tasks over time, and cloud vendors are now selling the runtime for that job, not just the chat window. (developers.cloudflare.com) Cloudflare said on April 13, 2026 that it expanded Agent Cloud with Dynamic Workers, Artifacts, Sandboxes in general availability, the Think framework, and a model catalog tied to its Replicate acquisition. The company said the package is meant to move agents from laptop demos to “production-grade workloads” on its network. (stocktitan.net) Cloudflare’s own documentation says each agent runs on a Durable Object, which is a stateful service with its own storage, WebSocket connections, and scheduling. Its GitHub repository describes agents as “persistent, stateful execution environments” that hibernate when idle and wake on demand. (developers.cloudflare.com) (github.com) OpenAI pushed the same stack in the application layer last week, when ChatGPT Business added a Slack connector that can pull context from Slack channels and direct messages into chat, Deep Research, and Agent Mode. OpenAI’s Slack help pages say the app can search messages, threads, and channels after an admin enables it. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) That combination turns a chatbot into something closer to office middleware: a system that can read company context, keep memory, and act across sessions. Cloudflare is packaging the runtime underneath; OpenAI is packaging the connector and controls that let workers use company data inside the product they already open every day. (developers.cloudflare.com) (help.openai.com) The recent product details are concrete. OpenAI’s April 2026 notes also added shared mailbox and shared calendar actions for Microsoft, while Enterprise and Edu notes on April 9 said users can add Slack channels and Google Drive files as project sources. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) Cloudflare’s pitch is that long-running agents need the same basic plumbing that web apps needed in earlier cloud eras: storage, scheduling, security, real-time connections, and isolation. Its Agents documentation says most artificial intelligence apps are still stateless, while “real agents” need memory, tools, coordination, and live connections to users. (developers.cloudflare.com) The timing is not accidental. Cloudflare tied its new model catalog to Replicate after acquiring the startup, and OpenAI is steadily turning connectors into admin-managed features with workspace controls, which makes both companies look less like demo builders and more like enterprise software vendors. (stocktitan.net) (help.openai.com) What is getting sold in 2026 is no longer only the answer box. It is the layer that lets agents remember, fetch, route, and act inside a company’s existing systems without leaving the guardrails set by administrators.
