Boston scores six Bib Gourmands

In its first Michelin year, Boston received six Bib Gourmand awards recognizing restaurants that deliver quality at good value. (hot969boston.com). Local reporting frames the Bib Gourmands as a sign of Boston’s strengthening and value-oriented dining scene as Michelin expands coverage. (hot969boston.com).

Boston’s first Michelin Guide class included six Bib Gourmand restaurants, giving the city a sizable batch of the guide’s “good quality, good value” awards in its debut year. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the 2025 Northeast Cities selection on November 18, 2025, at a ceremony in Philadelphia. In Boston’s inaugural showing, 311 Omakase won one Michelin Star, and six local restaurants received Bib Gourmands. (michelinmedia.com) Those six are Bar Volpe and Fox & The Knife in Boston, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen, Jahunger, and Pagu in Cambridge, and Mahaniyom in Brookline. Michelin’s Boston Bib Gourmand page lists exactly six restaurants. (guide.michelin.com) Bib Gourmand is Michelin’s value designation, separate from stars. Michelin says the award recognizes restaurants for “great food at a great value,” while stars are judged under the guide’s five criteria for the cooking itself. (michelinmedia.com, michelinmedia.com) Boston only joined the guide on May 12, 2025, when Michelin and Meet Boston said the city would enter a new Northeast Cities edition alongside Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, and Washington. Michelin said its inspectors were already dining in the market before the first list was published. (michelinmedia.com) The six Bibs also show where Michelin found Boston-area value: Italian in South Boston, Hunanese and Uyghur-leaning food in Cambridge, Asian-Spanish cooking in Central Square, and Thai in Brookline. Michelin’s listings identify Bar Volpe and Fox & The Knife as Italian, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen as Chinese and Hunanese, Pagu as Asian and Spanish, and Mahaniyom as Thai. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) Two of the six Bib Gourmands went to chef Karen Akunowicz’s South Boston restaurants, Bar Volpe and Fox & The Knife. Local television station WCVB reported Akunowicz said the recognition left her “blown away.” (guide.michelin.com, wcvb.com) Michelin and Meet Boston have framed the city’s arrival as a formal acknowledgment of a dining scene that had been building for years. Meet Boston chief executive Martha Sheridan said in May 2025 that the local restaurant scene had “reached new heights” as the guide entered the market. (michelinmedia.com) For diners, the practical takeaway is simpler than the ceremony math: Boston’s first Michelin year did not just produce a single star. It also produced six places Michelin says deliver strong meals without the highest-end price tag. (michelinmedia.com, guide.michelin.com)
