Detroit Joins Michelin

Michelin has added Detroit to its U.S. Guide, marking a new national recognition for the city’s restaurant scene and expanding Michelin’s Great Lakes focus. The inclusion follows Michelin’s regional expansion play and signals broader attention to culinary centers beyond traditional coastal cities. (clickondetroit.com)

Detroit restaurants are now being evaluated for Michelin stars after Michelin added the city to its new American Great Lakes edition. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the Great Lakes guide on April 8, 2026, and said the first restaurant selection will be revealed in 2027. Detroit is one of six cities in the edition, alongside Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh. (guide.michelin.com) The guide will cover restaurants in those cities, and Michelin said its inspectors are already making anonymous visits. The company’s ratings can include Michelin Stars, Bib Gourmand picks for good value, and other recommended restaurants. (guide.michelin.com) Detroit’s inclusion extends a campaign that began before the restaurant announcement. Visit Detroit launched the city’s first Michelin Green Guide in December 2024, a separate Michelin travel guide focused on culture, neighborhoods, architecture, and visitor experiences rather than restaurant stars. (visitdetroit.com) Visit Detroit said the restaurant guide can raise tourism spending and hotel demand by putting Detroit in front of travelers who use Michelin to plan trips. The tourism group built a dedicated Michelin landing page and is collecting sign-ups ahead of the 2027 awards. (visitdetroit.com, michelin.visitdetroit.com) Michelin has been widening its United States footprint through regional editions instead of sticking to a few coastal metros. Its site now lists guides for places including California, Florida, Colorado, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, New York, Texas and the American South, with Nashville set to host the 2026 American South ceremony on October 21. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) Detroit enters that system without any current Michelin-starred restaurants because the city had not previously been part of a Michelin restaurant guide. Michelin already had a presence in Detroit through its hotel selection, which includes properties such as Detroit Foundation Hotel. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) Local coverage has framed the move as a chance for Detroit chefs and dining rooms to compete for the same global badges that can change reservation demand overnight. The actual results will not be known until Michelin publishes the inaugural Great Lakes restaurant list in 2027. (freep.com, guide.michelin.com)
