Chinese EV giant BYD is reportedly exploring entry into Formula 1, potentially acquiring a team or creating a new one to boost brand recognition BYD Evaluates Motorsport Entry Through Formula 1.
BYD's potential entry aligns with Formula 1's increasing emphasis on hybrid powertrains, a field where BYD already possesses considerable expertise. The 2026 season introduces new regulations that significantly boost the electrical component of the hybrid drivetrain. This shift has already attracted other automotive giants like Audi and Cadillac to the sport. BYD's move would be a strategic effort to boost brand recognition outside of China, where it has already surpassed Tesla in EV sales. The company's overseas sales exceeded 1 million units last year, a 150% increase, and it's targeting 1.3 million units abroad in 2026. An F1 presence would provide a level of global exposure that raw sales volume alone cannot achieve. Acquiring an existing team is reportedly BYD's preferred route, given the substantial financial barriers to creating one from scratch. Building an F1 team can cost an estimated $500 million per season. Alpine, currently owned by Renault, has emerged as a logical target for acquisition. The Chinese Grand Prix could be an ideal stage for BYD to announce its motorsport plans. The event attracts global media attention and would provide a platform to showcase BYD's intentions regarding Formula 1 or the World Endurance Championship. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed his desire to see a Chinese manufacturer in F1. BYD's marketing strategy focuses on technological innovation, sustainability, and delivering affordable new energy solutions. The company's partnership with UEFA for EURO 2024 aimed to elevate brand awareness in Europe. BYD's global expansion includes tailoring its marketing to resonate with local markets.
