Charleston Wine and Food Festival Kicks Off

The 20th anniversary of Charleston's Wine and Food Festival is underway, having kicked off its five-day run with the "Street Eats" event on Friday. The festival showcases Lowcountry cuisine from a wide range of local chefs, restaurants, and food trucks.

This 20th-anniversary celebration is a long way from the festival's beginnings, an idea conceived by Circa 1886 chef Marc Collins in 2005. The inaugural event actually lost $100,000 but sparked a passion that has since transformed the festival into a major culinary event. Over its two decades, the festival has generated a significant economic boost for the Charleston region, with an estimated impact of over $170.48 million. The 2020 festival alone brought in $19.9 million. This year, the festival features over 90 events across five days, drawing attendees from all over the country. Special events for the 20th anniversary include an "Opening Night Reunion" celebrating culinary pioneers and a multi-course dinner called "20 Years at Charleston's Table" that traces the evolution of the city's food scene. The Culinary Village, the festival's largest tasting experience, also returns with themed neighborhoods and chef demonstrations. The festival operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to elevate and sustain the local culinary and hospitality community. Ninety cents of every dollar spent by the organization has a direct economic impact on the city. Beyond the main event, the festival's impact is felt year-round through various initiatives. These include workforce development programs, industry education, and philanthropic efforts aimed at building a sustainable and inclusive future for the region's culinary scene. The organization also funds scholarships for students in Hospitality and Tourism Management at the College of Charleston.
