OpenAI exec departures reported
Multiple outlets reported a one‑day cluster of senior departures at OpenAI that reportedly included its product chief, the head of Sora, and the enterprise CTO as the company pivots toward enterprise offerings. Coverage frames the exits alongside a shift to more commercially governed product surfaces, though the exact organisational impact is unclear. Three senior OpenAI leaders said on April 17 that they were leaving the company, extending a run of executive turnover during a broader reorganization. (cnbc.com) The departures reported Friday were Kevin Weil, who had moved from chief product officer to lead OpenAI for Science, Bill Peebles, who led the video product Sora, and Srinivas Narayanan, chief technology officer of business-to-business applications. CNBC reported that all three announced their exits in posts on X. (cnbc.com) OpenAI told CNBC it is decentralizing OpenAI for Science and moving that work closer to teams building models, products, and infrastructure. OpenAI’s help center separately says the Sora web and app experience will be discontinued on April 26, 2026, with the Sora application programming interface set to end on September 24, 2026. (cnbc.com) (help.openai.com) The exits land days after OpenAI published an April 8 post called “The next phase of enterprise AI,” led by chief revenue officer Denise Dresser. That post puts ChatGPT Enterprise, Codex, Frontier, and company-wide AI agents at the center of OpenAI’s sales push. (openai.com) This shift has been building for more than a year. In a March 24, 2025 leadership update, Sam Altman said chief operating officer Brad Lightcap would expand his role over business and day-to-day operations while chief research officer Mark Chen would more tightly integrate research and product development. (openai.com) The latest departures also follow other recent changes on the executive bench. On April 3, CNBC reported that product and business chief Fidji Simo took medical leave because of a worsening neuroimmune condition, while marketing chief Kate Rouch stepped down earlier in April to focus on cancer recovery. (cnbc.com) (campaignlive.com) Weil joined OpenAI in 2024 after senior roles at Meta and Twitter, and Peebles joined in 2023 before helping launch Sora. CNBC reported that Sora had risen to the top of Apple’s App Store before OpenAI shut the app last month to cut costs and reallocate computing capacity. (cnbc.com) OpenAI has not publicly laid out a full org chart for who absorbs each departing executive’s responsibilities. What is clear from the company’s own recent posts is that OpenAI is concentrating leadership and product effort around enterprise deployment, core model work, and infrastructure.
