Adidas Launches Shoe for Hybrid Fitness Racing

Adidas has debuted the Adizero Dropset Elite, its first shoe specifically designed for hybrid fitness racing. The footwear is engineered to provide stability and propulsion for athletes participating in events that combine running with strength and functional training disciplines.

The Adizero Dropset Elite enters the market at a premium price point of €275, available from March 18, 2026. This cost reflects its specialized design, which incorporates Adidas's high-performance Lightstrike Pro foam for running energy return and a stabilizing "Energy Rim" for functional exercises like wall balls. The shoe was developed with elite hybrid athletes, including two-time HYROX world champion Tim Wenisch, who has already won a race wearing the new footwear. This launch targets the rapidly expanding "hybrid fitness" trend, a sport combining running with functional strength challenges. Events like HYROX have seen explosive growth, with participation projected to hit 425,000 in the 2024/25 season, up from just 175,000 the previous year. This surge in popularity has created a dedicated market for specialized gear that can handle both endurance and power-based movements. The format of these races, such as HYROX's structure of a 1-kilometer run followed by a functional workout station repeated eight times, necessitates footwear that won't compromise on either running efficiency or stability during lifts and jumps. Athletes have previously had to choose between a cushioned running shoe or a more stable, flat trainer. Adidas's move is a direct challenge to competitors in the functional fitness space. Nike's Metcon series, including the Metcon 9, is a dominant force in CrossFit-style training, prized for its stability during heavy lifts but not optimized for distance running. Puma, a direct partner of the HYROX event series, offers shoes like the PWR Nitro SQD, which are geared towards high-intensity interval training. The release of the Dropset Elite is part of a broader strategic push by Adidas into this fitness category. The company has announced a long-term partnership with ATHX, another hybrid competition organizer, signaling a deeper investment in capturing a share of this growing athletic community.
