Toronto Gets 'Functional Dining' Restaurant

Toronto is welcoming Kyma, a new "functional dining" restaurant focused on promoting holistic wellness through food. The concept blends nutrition, mindful eating, and visually appealing plates, targeting diners who want to connect culinary pleasure with health goals.

Veteran Toronto restaurateur Hemant Bhagwani is the force behind Kyma. Bhagwani has launched over 60 restaurants, including notable concepts like the Amaya chain, Indian Street Food Co., and the Michelin-recommended Bar Goa. His career has been marked by introducing diverse culinary concepts to the city, from modern Indian to the first Burmese restaurant in Toronto. The menu at Kyma was developed in collaboration with a clinical nutritionist to bridge the gap between "culinary soul and rigorous health science." The restaurant's interior is designed to be a "sanctuary of wellness," featuring high ceilings, natural light, and pale wood finishes to reflect the food's intended harmony. Kyma is located at 2865 Dundas St. W. and opened with a promotion on March 6th where all dishes were priced at $10 for the day. "Functional dining" centers on the concept of using food to provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. This approach utilizes "functional foods" which contain bioactive compounds that can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The health effects are often linked to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Kyma's menu is based on the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in functional foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and olive oil. These ingredients are known to contain beneficial components such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and omega-3 fatty acids. Scientific studies have associated the Mediterranean diet with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. The dishes are designed to be high in protein, ranging from 40 to 55 grams per bowl. They incorporate sprouted grains and fermented fibers to support gut health and are made without seed oils. Menu highlights include the Harissa Bowl with grilled chicken and black lentils and the Olympian bowl with Ahi tuna and quinoa. The beverage menu also aligns with the health-conscious theme, offering "hydration meets high-performance" options. These include a cucumber-mint electrolyte drink, iced collagen tea, and a Greek yogurt kefir cooler. This further emphasizes the restaurant's commitment to providing a holistic wellness experience through its food and drink offerings.
