Rodri Escapes Ban Despite Ref Comments

Manchester City midfielder Rodri was fined £80,000 for calling referee Robert Jones "not neutral" after last month's 2-2 Tottenham draw, but escaped a suspension. The decision keeps him available for City's crucial title race fixtures against Arsenal, who remain Premier League leaders.

The comments stemmed from a controversial goal in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham on February 1st. Rodri and other Manchester City players were incensed when a goal from Spurs' Dominic Solanke was allowed to stand, despite claims he had kicked through the leg of City defender Marc Guehi in the process. In a post-match interview, Rodri stated, "I know we won too much and the people don't want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral." He also expressed frustration over what he perceived as a series of incorrect decisions against his team in consecutive games. The Football Association subsequently charged Rodri with misconduct for comments that "imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official." This action was consistent with FA Rule E3.1, which governs players' post-match media interactions. An independent Regulatory Commission ultimately decided against a suspension, a key factor being Rodri's admission of the charge at the earliest opportunity and his previously clean disciplinary record regarding media conduct. The commission ruled that the offense did not meet the threshold for a sporting sanction. As part of the proceedings, Rodri submitted two letters to the FA. In the first, he claimed his words were misinterpreted by the media, and in the second, he acknowledged they were "inappropriate" and "poorly chosen," apologizing for his remarks.
