Next Xbox Plays PC Games

Microsoft confirmed its next-generation Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix, will natively play PC games, blurring the line between console and PC gaming. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma framed the hardware as a sign of the company's "commitment to the return of Xbox."

This move is the culmination of a years-long strategy to merge the Xbox and PC ecosystems. Microsoft's "Xbox Play Anywhere" initiative, launched in 2016, was an early step, allowing gamers to buy a title once and play it on either their console or Windows PC with shared game saves. The original Xbox in 2001 was built using standard PC components, including a custom Intel Pentium III processor and a version of the DirectX API, which is foundational to Windows gaming. Project Helix represents a full-circle return to these PC roots, with reports suggesting it will run a version of Windows under its console interface. Financially, the strategy follows the growth in software and services. In a recent fiscal quarter, Microsoft's gaming division saw hardware revenue decline while PC Game Pass revenue grew significantly. As of February 2024, the overall Game Pass service had 34 million subscribers. The new hardware is rumored to feature a hybrid AMD system-on-chip that combines Xbox and PC-style architecture. This could simplify game development and potentially allow the console to access other PC game storefronts like Steam or the Epic Games Store, a move former Xbox head Phil Spencer has previously expressed interest in. This hardware convergence reflects a broader "play anywhere" philosophy championed by Microsoft Gaming leadership. The goal is to allow users to play their games on various devices, including consoles, PCs, and through cloud gaming, rather than being locked into a single piece of hardware. The shift comes amid leadership changes, with Asha Sharma taking over as Xbox CEO after Phil Spencer's retirement. Sharma has emphasized a continued commitment to physical console hardware, positioning Project Helix as a performance leader that embraces the expanded PC gaming library.
