Afro Deli Owner Plans Upscale Eatery
Abdirahman Kahin, the owner of Afro Deli, plans to launch Martiya, a new upscale East African restaurant at Lake and Nicollet. The new venture is slated to open in July.
Abdirahman Kahin, recognized as the 2023 National Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration, is the driving force behind the new venture. An immigrant who arrived from Somalia in 1996, Kahin launched the first Afro Deli in 2010, introducing a fusion of African, Mediterranean, and American flavors to Minneapolis. His success has grown to four Afro Deli locations across the Twin Cities. The forthcoming restaurant, Martiya, signals a significant evolution from Kahin's established fast-casual model. It is described as his first full-service, sit-down restaurant, promising an upscale dining experience centered around Somali-fusion cuisine. This move aims to provide a setting where chefs can create more elaborate tasting menus and specials that go beyond grab-and-go offerings. Martiya is part of a new parent company, Martisoor Hospitality Group, founded by Kahin to create a range of food and beverage experiences from fast-casual to fine dining. The group's mission is to celebrate cultural heritage through exceptional dining and design, honoring its Afro-Mediterranean roots. The name "Martiya" itself is of Persian origin, meaning "warrior." This choice hints at a bold and assertive new presence in the Minneapolis dining scene. While Afro Deli introduced many to East African staples, Martiya is positioned to elevate Somali cuisine to a new level of culinary artistry.
