Josh Sargent Joins Toronto FC

Toronto FC completed a major signing by acquiring U.S. international Josh Sargent from Norwich City for over £20 million. Sargent, 26, scored 56 goals in 157 appearances for Norwich and will be a Designated Player on a five-year deal—a signal of MLS's growing international pull.

The transfer fee, reported as an initial £17 million that could rise to over £20 million, places Sargent among the most expensive signings in Major League Soccer history. This significant investment signals Toronto FC's urgent desire to reverse its fortunes after a dismal 2025 season that saw the club finish 25th overall and miss the playoffs. Sargent's move follows a contentious departure from Norwich City. The striker was relegated to training with the club's under-21 squad after reportedly making himself unavailable for an FA Cup match in an effort to force the transfer. Despite the messy exit, Norwich's sporting director acknowledged Sargent had been a "significant part of the club's recent story." Before the transfer, the 26-year-old was in solid form for the English Championship side, having scored eight goals in the 2025-2026 season. His proven scoring ability in a highly physical league is a key reason Toronto targeted him to lead their attack for the foreseeable future. A full US international, Sargent was part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, where he featured in all three group-stage matches. However, he has not scored for the national team since 2019 and will be looking to regain his international standing while playing in North America ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
