Ortiz-Ennis Fight Derailed

A Nevada judge has granted Golden Boy Promotions' motion for arbitration in the Vergil Ortiz Jr. case, dealing a huge blow to the anticipated Ortiz Jr. vs. Jaron "Boots" Ennis fight. The legal process is expected to delay or potentially derail the bout for several months.

The legal battle hinges on a clause in Vergil Ortiz Jr.'s contract with Golden Boy Promotions. Ortiz argues his contract was tied to Golden Boy's broadcast deal with DAZN, which he claims expired on December 31, allowing him to terminate the agreement. Golden Boy contends their ongoing negotiations to renew the DAZN deal mean the promotional agreement remains in effect. This dispute escalated on January 16, when Ortiz filed a federal lawsuit against Golden Boy to end his contract. In response, Golden Boy secured a temporary restraining order in February to prevent Ortiz from negotiating with other promoters, specifically Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, with whom he was discussing a lucrative multi-fight deal. The now-stalled Ortiz-Ennis bout was being targeted for the spring. Jaron "Boots" Ennis is promoted by Matchroom Boxing, and a reported three-fight deal for Ortiz with Matchroom was worth a guaranteed $12 million and could have risen to $20 million. The recent court ruling sided with Golden Boy, compelling arbitration and issuing an interim injunction that blocks Ortiz from negotiating with any third parties. This moves the contract dispute out of the public court system and into private arbitration. While there is no fixed timetable for arbitration, the judge has requested that the arbitrator help settle the matter by September 2, 2026. This legal process effectively puts the highly anticipated fight on hold for several months. With the Ortiz fight in limbo, Jaron Ennis's promoter, Eddie Hearn, has already formulated a backup plan to keep his fighter active. This includes potential matchups against other top names in the 154-pound division like Xander Zayas or Josh Kelly. This is not the first time Golden Boy has been in a public contract dispute with one of its star fighters. The promotion has a history of legal battles with prominent boxers on its roster. Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy's chairman, celebrated the recent court victory on social media, stating "Justice prevails."
