Opetaia Routs Glanton Despite IBF Drama
Jai Opetaia dominated Brandon Glanton 119-106 to claim the inaugural Zuffa World cruiserweight championship at Meta Apex, Las Vegas. The IBF stripped Opetaia of his cruiserweight belt just before the fight due to competing under Zuffa Boxing. In defiance, Opetaia wore his IBF belt into the ring after his victory, with Dana White hinting at possible legal action against the sanctioning body.
This marks the second time the International Boxing Federation has stripped Jai Opetaia of its cruiserweight title. The first instance occurred in late 2023 when he opted to fight Ellis Zorro on a lucrative card in Saudi Arabia instead of facing his mandatory challenger, Mairis Briedis. Opetaia would later reclaim the vacant belt by defeating Briedis again in May 2024. The IBF's official reasoning for its latest move was that by fighting for the Zuffa Boxing championship, Opetaia was participating in a bout sanctioned by an unrecognized body. According to IBF Rule 5.H, if a champion participates in an unsanctioned contest within their weight limit, the title is declared vacant regardless of the outcome. However, reports emerged that the last-minute decision, which came after an IBF supervisor was already present during fight week, was due to IBF President Daryl Peoples feeling "disrespected." The issue reportedly stemmed from the positioning of the belts at a press conference, where the new Zuffa title was seen as taking precedence over the IBF strap. The fight itself was a statistical mismatch, underscoring Opetaia's dominance. He landed a total of 250 punches compared to Brandon Glanton's 118 over the 12 rounds. The Australian connected on 46% of his power punches, landing 127 more punches overall than his opponent. Zuffa Boxing is a new promotional venture led by UFC CEO Dana White, in partnership with Saudi Arabia's Sela investment arm. The promotion aims to disrupt the established order of boxing by moving away from the multiple sanctioning bodies and creating its own singular championship, similar to the UFC model. Opetaia remains The Ring magazine's cruiserweight champion, a title he has held since 2022. His next move will likely be a major unification bout, with many pointing to the winner of the upcoming May 2 fight between Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez and David Benavidez as his most logical and anticipated next opponent.
