Google Nest Smart Lock Migration
Google Home ecosystem continues full migration of smart locks (Nest x Yale Lock) into the Home app, demonstrating Matter’s cross-ecosystem promise. This points to a future where Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Alexa offer seamless, vendor-neutral automation.
The Nest x Yale Lock, launched in 2018, is now fully supported in the Google Home app, completing its migration from the legacy Nest app. This integration allows users to manage passcodes, schedule guest access, view activity history, and receive real-time notifications directly within the Google Home app. With this update, the Nest app is effectively obsolete for many users. Google's move reflects the broader industry trend towards unified smart home ecosystems, exemplified by the Matter standard. Matter, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), aims to improve interoperability between devices from different manufacturers. Version 1.5, released in November 2025, expanded support for camera streaming and energy management. The Google Home app provides a centralized platform for controlling compatible devices, organizing them by room and location. Users can create automated routines and manage settings, with recent updates including Gemini-powered features and improved Nest lock controls. Google Home offers limited automation features, allowing users to create automated routines launched manually or via Google Assistant. While Google Home offers broad device compatibility, Apple HomeKit focuses on tighter integration within the Apple ecosystem. Apple Home relies on Apple devices like iPhones and HomePods for control, while Google Home supports both Android and iOS devices. Apple Home emphasizes privacy and stability, while Google Home prioritizes openness and compatibility.
