DIY Security Gadget Launches

CiferTech's new ESP32-S3 handheld device lets security enthusiasts audit, clone, and block RFID/NFC signals for hands-on digital privacy control. The platform is designed for experimentation, making it suitable for both personal privacy defense and learning wireless authentication technology.

The device is an enhanced version of an earlier project called "NullTag," moving from off-the-shelf modules to a custom three-board design for better performance. This new architecture features a main board with an ESP32-S3 microcontroller, a dedicated controller board for RFID/NFC logic, and a separate antenna board. This separation of the custom 13.56 MHz PCB trace antenna is a deliberate design choice to minimize electromagnetic interference from the digital components. At the heart of the device is the Espressif ESP32-S3, a dual-core XTensa LX7 MCU that can run at up to 240 MHz. This specific microcontroller was chosen for its processing speed, which ensures a smooth and responsive graphical interface on the device's full-color TFT display. The ESP32-S3 also includes integrated 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 (LE) connectivity. For its RFID and NFC functions, the handheld uses a dedicated controller board built around the PN532 chip. Instead of a common pre-made breakout board, CiferTech created a custom PCB with the chip and its necessary analog support circuitry. This allows the device to not only block signals but also to clone compatible tags, analyze raw memory data, and interpret access bytes that control how a card can be read or written to. This CiferTech gadget is part of a larger portfolio of open-source security tools developed by the same creator. Other projects include the nRFBOX for 2.4GHz spectrum analysis and the ESP32-DIV, a multi-band wireless toolkit for Wi-Fi, BLE, and Sub-GHz frequencies. This background highlights a focus on creating accessible hardware for wireless experimentation and security testing.
