Remote Work Power Shifts to Employers
The U.S. labor market shows signs of cooling with fewer job openings per unemployed person than in prior years, shifting power back toward employers. Jobless claims dropped to 206,000 last week while incentives for workers to change jobs have dimmed significantly. Remote job seekers face stiffer competition as voluntary job switching has slowed considerably from the "Great Resignation" era.
- While the power dynamic may be shifting, a majority of companies are settling into a middle ground, with research from 2025 showing about 75% of companies have adopted a hybrid approach. The most common model is three days in the office and two days remote. - Return-to-office (RTO) mandates have become common, with 70% of companies now having formal policies requiring some in-office time. However, these mandates have led to higher employee attrition for 42% of companies that have implemented them. Some studies indicate that RTO mandates can decrease employee satisfaction without a significant improvement in the company's financial performance. - Employee preference for flexible work remains strong, with one survey showing 98% of workers want to work remotely at least some of the time. If faced with a full-time return to the office, 41% of employees say they would look for another job, and 14% would quit outright. - Major corporations are not aligned on a single strategy. While companies like Amazon and Morgan Stanley now require five days a week in the office, others like Microsoft and Adobe require 2-3 days, and some, including Shopify and Spotify, maintain a "work from anywhere" policy. - Research from the University of Pittsburgh suggests that some managers' motives for RTO mandates may include reasserting control or blaming employees for poor company performance. Almost half of employees surveyed by Gartner believe their company's RTO mandates prioritize what leaders want rather than what employees need. - The debate over productivity continues, with 84% of employees reporting they are more productive in a hybrid or remote setting. Conversely, 84% of employers mandating a return to the office cite a belief that face-to-face interaction boosts team engagement. - As of the last quarter of 2025, 65% of new job postings were for fully on-site roles, while 24% were for hybrid positions and 11% were for fully remote opportunities. Flexible work options are more prevalent for senior-level roles, with 30% being hybrid and 13% remote.
