Missing Man Found Alive in Mud
A man missing for ten days was found alive, trapped up to his shoulders in mud in a remote area. Rescuers describe his survival as miraculous after an extensive search, highlighting both the dangers of solo exploration and human resilience in life-threatening situations.
The man, identified as 36-year-old Andrew Giddens of Jacksonville, Florida, was discovered at a Vulcan Materials sand plant. He had been missing since February 14th and was found on February 26th, having survived without food or water while also being exposed to freezing temperatures. A deputy from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office discovered Giddens' abandoned vehicle on February 23rd, which initiated a welfare check and a subsequent search of the area. Employees of the Vulcan sand plant found him two days later, submerged up to his shoulders in mud near a borrow pit on the large property. The rescue was a complex three-hour operation involving the Palatka Fire Department, Putnam County Fire Rescue, and the Melrose Fire Department. Due to the unstable ground around Giddens, rescuers couldn't simply pull him out with ropes and instead used ladders and other equipment to safely dig him out. Giddens was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition but has since been stabilized. Authorities have indicated that his mental health is a factor in the case and no charges are currently being considered, noting he was dealing with depression following a recent breakup.
