New Indian Restaurant Opens in Alexandria
The Bombay Canteen, a new restaurant focused on authentic regional Indian cuisine, has opened on Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria, VA. Its menu ranges from street food to traditional curries, adding a new culinary option to the neighborhood.
The new eatery at 2010 Eisenhower Avenue is a passion project for D.C.-area restaurateur Asad Sheikh and chef Nishi Barua, replacing the former Hunan Cafe. For Barua, it's the realization of a 15-year dream to open a restaurant inspired by the flavors of Mumbai, where she spent her college years developing her culinary passion. This opening marks a return to the city for Sheikh, who previously owned London Curry House in Cameron Station before selling it in 2017 to focus on his Washington, D.C. ventures. The grand opening celebration featured a traditional Indian coconut-smashing ritual on the pavement outside the restaurant to bring good luck. The restaurant's interior is designed to evoke the bustling atmosphere of Mumbai, where Sheikh grew up. The decor features red booths and vibrant colors that reflect the hues of Indian curries, complemented by Bollywood art. The menu heavily features Mumbai street food, with offerings like vada pav (spiced potato sliders) and crispy pani puris. Beyond street food, the menu includes a variety of grill kebabs, traditional curries like Butter Chicken and Lamb Rogan Josh, and house-made Indian-inspired gelatos in flavors such as Mango Lassi and Rose Petal. A weekday lunch special offers an unlimited thali platter for $18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
