Medieval "Harrying of the North" Article

"Aspects of History" shared Paul Bernardi's article on "The Harrying of the North," describing this brutal 11th-century event and linking to his novel *The Reckoning*. Historia Magazine's March newsletter covered Roman exiles, Victorian sex cults, and *Wuthering Heights* retellings with open HWA competitions.

The Harrying of the North was a brutal series of campaigns by William the Conqueror in the winter of 1069-1070 to crush rebellions in northern England. These uprisings were fueled by the presence of Edgar Ætheling, the last claimant from the House of Wessex, and involved a mix of Anglo-Saxon, Northumbrian, and Danish forces. Frustrated by the rebels' guerrilla tactics and their refusal to engage in open battle, William employed a scorched-earth policy. His armies systematically destroyed settlements, crops, and livestock from the Humber to the Tees, aiming to eliminate the rebels' support systems and starve them into submission. This strategy was intended to prevent any future uprisings in the region. The devastation was catastrophic, leading to a widespread famine that resulted in an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 deaths from starvation and massacres. Contemporary chroniclers recorded acts of cannibalism and people selling themselves into slavery to survive. Refugees from the destruction fled as far south as Worcestershire. The long-term impact was profound. The Domesday Book, compiled in 1086, recorded that large parts of Yorkshire were still "waste" nearly two decades later, with 60% of all holdings destroyed. The region's population may have decreased by as much as 75%, and its economic value plummeted. Following the campaign, William replaced the remaining Anglo-Saxon aristocracy in the north with loyal Normans, solidifying his control. While some historians have labeled the events as a genocide, others argue it was a brutal but not uncommon military tactic for the era. The Harrying effectively ended northern resistance to Norman rule.
