Solana Meme Coin 'Rug Pull' Tutorials Proliferate

A series of new YouTube videos are instructing users on how to launch meme coins on Solana, with some explicitly including "rug pull" mechanics. The emergence of such content highlights the accessibility of token creation on the network. This trend signals a growing security risk and a need for improved investor education and on-chain monitoring tools.

- A recent analysis of the popular Solana-based token launch platform, pump.fun, revealed that a staggering 98.6% of the 7 million tokens launched since the beginning of 2024 were identified as rug pulls. Out of these millions of tokens, only about 97,000 managed to surpass $1,000 in liquidity. - The number of active addresses on the Solana network saw a significant decline, dropping nearly 40% from 15.6 million in November 2024 to 9.5 million in February 2025, a cooldown linked to eroding trust from memecoin rug pulls. This has been accompanied by a negative monthly capital inflow into Solana and its meme coin index as of February 2025. - In one notable instance, developers of the "CONDOM" meme coin allegedly disappeared with 4,965 SOL, valued at approximately $906,000 at the time, which was raised during the coin's presale. Similarly, the team behind the URF meme coin vanished with 2,400 SOL (worth $450,000) less than a day after its launch. - The accessibility of token creation is highlighted by platforms like pump.fun, which allows users to launch a new token by simply picking a name, symbol, and image for a fee of around 0.02 SOL. This ease of use has led to over 3.85 million memecoins being created on the platform as of November 2024. - An unusual case involved a 12-year-old trader who attempted to "rug pull" the Gen Z Quant (QUANT) token on a live stream after making a profit of around $30,000. In a surprising turn, the crypto community retaliated by pushing the token's market capitalization to over $80 million as a form of "revenge." - On-chain analyst ZachXBT reported that between March 12th and April 4th, 2024, 33 presales in the Solana ecosystem had raised a total of 796,000 SOL. However, many of these projects proved to be opaque, with at least four confirmed rug pulls resulting in losses of around 25,400 SOL. - The issue extends beyond small-scale projects, with allegations of a $107 million rug pull connected to the Libra token, which was endorsed by Argentine President Javier Milei. This event reportedly led to a 94% price collapse and wiped out $4 billion in investor capital. - The proliferation of fraudulent tokens is not limited to pump.fun; an analysis of liquidity pools on the decentralized exchange Raydium showed that 93% of them exhibited characteristics of "soft rug pulls," where developers slowly drain liquidity. The largest such rug pull detected on the platform amounted to $1.9 million.
