Turkish Firms Showcase New AI Defense Systems

Turkish defense companies recently showcased several new AI-integrated military systems. These include the Bayraktar TB2T-AI drone, which completed a successful autonomous test flight, and an AI-powered laser tank system by FNSS and Roketsan designed to autonomously neutralize hostile drones. Aselsan also profiled its GÖKBERK, a mobile AI system for counter-drone defense in dynamic environments.

- Turkey's defense and aerospace exports saw significant growth, reaching $7.15 billion in 2024, a 29% increase from $5.5 billion in 2023. This growth is driven by the export of over 230 products to approximately 170 countries, with Baykar being the top exporter at $1.8 billion in foreign sales. - Aselsan's GÖKBERK system integrates a 5-kW laser developed by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM for "hard-kill" destruction and an electronic jammer for "soft-kill" effects, capable of neutralizing drones up to 1.5 kilometers away. Its AI-supported algorithms enhance target tracking and identification, enabling rapid engagement. - The FNSS and Roketsan laser system, named ALKA-KAPLAN, is mounted on a hybrid tracked vehicle. It combines a laser for hard-kill capabilities and an electromagnetic jamming system for soft-kill disruption of hostile drones. The AI-assisted architecture aids in rapid threat identification and tracking. - The Bayraktar TB3, a successor to the TB2, is designed for short-runway aircraft carriers, featuring foldable wings and a maximum take-off weight of 1,450 kg. It has a payload capacity of 280 kg and can carry various laser-guided and GPS-guided munitions. - The Turkish government is actively fostering an AI-driven defense ecosystem through initiatives like the "National Technology and Artificial Intelligence General Directorate" and projects like the "Steel Dome" integrated air defense system. The aim is to achieve an 83% domestic content rate in the defense industry. - The Turkish AI market is projected to reach $1.62 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to $7.37 billion by 2030, with machine learning and natural language processing showing the most significant growth. - Turkish defense firm Baykar is investing $100 million in three projects in Ukraine, including a manufacturing plant that will take approximately 1.5 years to complete and employ at least 300 people. - In a move to expand into the European market, Baykar has entered into a strategic cooperation with Italian defense company Leonardo to jointly produce unmanned aerial vehicles and collaborate on AI, electronic systems, and C4I.
