Virginia Beach Surf Park Reopening Soon

Virginia Beach's popular surf park lagoon has been drained for maintenance but is expected to reopen soon. The temporary closure is part of routine upkeep, with local surfers and visitors anticipating improved conditions once the lagoon is operational again.

The Virginia Beach surf park, officially named Atlantic Park Surf, is the centerpiece of a $350 million multi-use development project. This entertainment district, which spans 10 acres between 18th and 20th streets, was spearheaded by music superstar and Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams. The 2.67-acre surf lagoon, which opened to the public on August 16, 2025, is the first of its kind in North America to use Wavegarden Cove technology. This system, developed in Spain, can generate up to 1,000 waves per hour, with more than 20 different wave types suitable for all skill levels. Waves at the park can be customized, ranging from one-foot rollers for beginners to powerful six-foot barrels for experienced surfers. A 55-minute session provides a surfer with an average of 10 to 15 waves. The facility was designed to address the inconsistent surfing conditions of the Atlantic Ocean. Beyond the waves, the larger Atlantic Park development includes a 3,500-capacity live music venue called The Dome, which is a revival of a historic local venue. The project also features restaurants, retail spaces, and residential units, transforming the area into a year-round destination.
