Menace Revitalizes Turn-Based Tactics

Strategy game Menace launched to critical acclaim, being praised as "a breath of fresh air" after a decade of genre stagnation. Critics highlight its innovative mechanics and strategic depth as a must-try for tactical gaming fans.

- The game comes from Overhype Studios, an independent developer based in Hamburg, Germany, known for their critically acclaimed 2017 tactical RPG, *Battle Brothers*. - *Menace* launched into Early Access on February 5, 2026, and is available on PC Game Pass in addition to Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. The developers anticipate the Early Access period will last for about a year. - A core gameplay mechanic is the suppression system, where units under fire have their accuracy and action points reduced, even if the shots miss. Sustained fire can pin units down, rendering them unable to act, or even cause them to flee the battlefield. - The game's combat system forgoes a traditional initiative order; instead, players have the freedom to activate any of their units during their turn. This allows for tactical sequencing, such as moving a unit at the end of one round and then immediately attacking with it at the start of the next. - Players command the strike cruiser TCRN Impetus, which was stranded in the lawless "Wayback system" after a disaster during faster-than-light travel. The ship serves as a mobile base of operations between missions. - The campaign is built around procedurally generated operations, which consist of a series of linked tactical missions. As of its Early Access launch, the game includes roughly the first third of its planned campaign content. - Instead of a standard currency, the game features a barter system for acquiring new gear on the black market, and a supply budget for each mission limits the amount of high-end equipment that can be deployed. - Since its launch, developer Overhype Studios has released multiple patches that have added new content, such as new weapons and armor, alongside balance changes and bug fixes.
