4,000-Year-Old Tombs Found in Egypt

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a set of Old Kingdom tombs at Qubbet el Hawa, near Aswan. The 4,000-year-old site contained over 160 pottery vessels and well-preserved inscriptions. The find is expected to offer new insights into the burial practices and social hierarchy of Egypt’s early dynasties.

- The discovery was made by an Egyptian mission from the Supreme Council of Antiquities, part of a national strategy to bolster cultural tourism, a sector that accounted for 11.9% of the country's GDP prior to recent investment pushes. - Aswan, the site of the find, has been named the "Tourist City of the Year" for 2026 by the Developing-8 (D-8) Organisation for Economic Cooperation, reflecting a coordinated effort by Egypt to highlight the area's growing tourism infrastructure and investment potential. - The Qubbet el Hawa necropolis, where the tombs were found, was the burial ground for governors and high officials who managed Egypt's southern frontier, a crucial hub for trade and military campaigns during the Old Kingdom. - The inscriptions found on pottery vessels were written in hieratic, a cursive script used for administrative and record-keeping purposes, suggesting they detailed the contents or ownership of funerary goods intended for the afterlife. - Evidence shows the tombs were reused during the First Intermediate Period and the Middle Kingdom, with later artifacts like copper alloy mirrors and alabaster kohl containers also discovered, indicating the site's sustained economic and cultural importance over centuries. - This is one of several recent finds at the necropolis, which holds nearly 100 tombs; previous discoveries in the last few years include 10 mummified crocodiles and several other graves from the Old Kingdom. - During the Old Kingdom, the state was highly centralized, and high-ranking officials were often relatives of the king, buried in elaborate tombs to reflect their status and proximity to power.
