Block Cuts Nearly Half Its Workforce

Block is laying off nearly half of its workforce in a massive restructuring. CEO Jack Dorsey framed the move as an AI-driven shift, stating that AI could displace workers across the industry. The new mandate for platform teams is to provide these AI capabilities as a secure, governed, self-service offering, effectively becoming the AI enabler for the entire enterprise. Departing employees are being offered a significant severance package, including 20 weeks of salary plus one week per year of tenure, vested equity through May, six months of healthcare coverage, and an additional $5,000.
