Hollow-Core Fiber Aims for Ultra-Low Latency

Hollow-core fiber guides light through an air-filled central channel instead of a solid glass core. This fundamental design shift allows light to travel at nearly its vacuum speed, approximately 99.7% of the speed of light, as opposed to the roughly 67-69% it achieves in conventional silica glass fiber. The result is a latency reduction of about 30-50%, a game-changing advantage in applications where every microsecond counts. For high-frequency trading, this technology provides a decisive edge by shaving off critical microseconds in transaction times. A 1,000 km link between financial centers could see a latency improvement of about 1.5 milliseconds. This speed advantage extends to data center interconnections, allowing for faster data synchronization and enabling AI and machine learning models to be trained more efficiently across distributed locations. Beyond finance and AI, hollow-core fiber supports higher power handling with significantly lower nonlinear effects compared to solid-core fiber, a reduction of about 1,000 times. This makes it suitable for high-power laser delivery in industrial and medical applications. Its unique structure also offers enhanced security, as the air-guided core is more resistant to physical tapping. Despite its advantages, widespread adoption faces hurdles. Manufacturing the intricate micro-structured cladding is complex and costly. Splicing hollow-core to traditional solid-core fiber also presents technical challenges, including potential signal loss. However, companies like Corning, Prysmian, and startups such as Relativity Networks are actively working to scale production and address these operational issues.
