The U.S. House has passed a bill to rename a Sterling post office for Firefighter Trevor Brown, the volunteer firefighter killed in a 2024 house explosion. (congress.gov, loudountimes.com) The bill, H.R. 5058, passed the House on April 14, 2026, and would designate the United States Postal Service facility at 46164 Westlake Drive as the “Firefighter Trevor Brown Post Office Building.” Representative Suhas Subramanyam of Virginia introduced it on August 26, 2025, with support from other members of the state’s House delegation. (congress.gov, govinfo.gov) Brown was 45 and served with the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company. Federal and local records say he died on February 16, 2024, after crews responded to a reported gas odor outside a home on Silver Ridge Drive in Sterling. (apps.usfa.fema.gov, firehero.org) Investigators said firefighters found a leaking underground propane tank at the house and called for Loudoun County’s Hazardous Materials Response Team before a catastrophic explosion leveled the home. Loudoun County’s incident report says Brown was killed and 13 other people were injured. (loudoun.gov, wusa9.com) The post office bill is one of Congress’s routine memorial measures, but it arrives after more than a year of public mourning in Loudoun County and a federal Roll of Honor recognition for Brown in 2025. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine introduced the Senate version earlier this year. (firehero.org, kaine.senate.gov) Subramanyam said on the House floor that Brown was “a husband and father of three” who coached youth soccer and baseball in the community he served. Local coverage of Brown’s funeral reported that more than 3,000 personnel attended the March 4, 2024 celebration of life in Leesburg. (subramanyam.house.gov, sterlingrescue.org) The explosion also led to criminal charges against a former propane company employee. In July 2025, a Loudoun County jury found Roger Bentley guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the case, according to NBC Washington. (nbcwashington.com) The House vote does not rename the building by itself; the Senate must also pass the measure before it can go to the president. If that happens, the Sterling postal address on Westlake Drive would carry Brown’s name permanently. (congress.gov, kaine.senate.gov)
