2026 F1 Regulations Change Energy Management

Formula 1's new 2026 regulations change energy management systems, where top speeds are now reached mid-straight due to electrical deployment limits before braking zones. The regulations apply to all teams, with debates comparing new cars' straight-line speeds to 2025 models, noting deficits in corner exits despite higher top speeds.

- The new power units will feature a near 50/50 split between the internal combustion engine and electrical power, a significant change from the previous 80/20 ratio. The electrical power from the MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic) will nearly triple, increasing from 120kW to 350kW. - To simplify the power unit and increase road relevance, the complex MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit - Heat), which recovered energy from exhaust gases, has been completely removed. This change has been a key factor in attracting new manufacturers like Audi and Ford to the sport. - All cars will be powered by 100% advanced sustainable fuels. These "drop-in" synthetic fuels are produced from sources like non-food biomass, municipal waste, and carbon capture, and are designed to not impact performance. - The Drag Reduction System (DRS) is being replaced by active aerodynamics, featuring movable front and rear wings. Drivers can switch between a high-downforce "Corner Mode" and a low-drag "Straight Mode" on designated parts of the track to manage energy and speed. - An "Overtake Mode" will provide a temporary boost of electrical power. This can be activated when a driver is within one second of the car ahead at a detection point, granting extra energy deployment for the following lap. - The cars themselves will be smaller and more agile, with the wheelbase reduced by 200mm and the overall width cut by 100mm. The minimum weight will also be reduced by 30kg to 768kg. - The front tires for the 2026 cars will be 25mm narrower, and the rear tires will be 30mm narrower, which is intended to help reduce overall drag.
