Zumba Basic Training Today

Zumba Basic 1 Training with MiRan Kapaki is happening today, offering instructors and newcomers a chance to deepen their skills in the joyful, dance-driven format. The session continues Zumba's focus on energizing group fitness experiences worldwide.

Zumba's creation was a happy accident. In the 1990s, Colombian aerobics instructor Alberto "Beto" Pérez forgot his regular music for a class and improvised with his personal Latin dance music tapes. The spontaneous, dance-party-like class was an instant hit with his clients, laying the foundation for the global fitness phenomenon. The "three Albertos" — Beto Pérez, Alberto Perlman, and Alberto Aghion — officially launched the Zumba brand in 2001, first through infomercials and DVDs. Today, it's a worldwide sensation with approximately 15 million people taking classes weekly in 180 countries. The global Zumba market was valued at $5.8 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $12.1 billion by 2033. This growth is fueled by a diverse range of classes beyond the basics. Offerings include Zumba Gold for older adults, Aqua Zumba in pools, and even programs for kids. Zumba continues to evolve to stay current, incorporating popular music styles like Afrobeat and Latin Urban to appeal to younger generations. The company has also expanded into digital fitness with on-demand classes and a consumer app, ensuring its reach in the ever-changing fitness landscape. The instructor for today's training, MiRan Kapaki, is a Zumba Education Specialist (ZES) for Washington State. She began her own Zumba journey after having three children and weighing over 200 pounds, finding that the program gave her a newfound confidence and joy. Basic 1 Training, like the one happening today, is the foundational step for aspiring instructors. Participants learn the core rhythms — Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, and Reggaeton — and the formula to build their own effective and engaging classes.
