Hot Sauce Brand Heatonist Goes Mainstream
Heatonist founder Noah Chaimberg explained how he turned hot sauce from a niche condiment into a cultural phenomenon. In a recent podcast, he detailed the journey from a Brooklyn pushcart to becoming the official hot sauce partner for the viral show "Hot Ones," which he says "turned hot sauce into a social experience." The company now dominates on Amazon and runs a multi-channel retail and e-commerce business.
Before "Hot Ones," Heatonist founder Noah Chaimberg was a one-man operation that began in 2013, selling a curated collection of small-batch hot sauces from a pushcart at Brooklyn markets. His focus was on flavor and unique ingredients rather than just extreme heat, a departure from the existing market. This approach resonated with customers, leading to the opening of a dedicated tasting room in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2015. The partnership with the YouTube interview show "Hot Ones" also began in 2015, a collaboration that would prove to be a pivotal moment for the brand. Heatonist was tasked with sourcing unique hot sauces for the show's celebrity guests, catapulting niche brands to national recognition. This collaboration also led to the creation of exclusive and immensely popular "Hot Ones" branded sauces, including "The Last Dab." The success of the partnership translated into significant financial growth. By 2018, sales linked to "Hot Ones" sauces had surpassed $7 million. One release of "The Last Dab Reduxx" saw 1,000 bottles sell out in just minutes, a sales velocity compared to a sneaker drop. This momentum has continued, with Heatonist's total annual sales reaching an estimated $45 million in 2024. Riding this wave of popularity, Heatonist has expanded its retail footprint far beyond its New York City origins. The company's sauces, particularly the "Hot Ones" line, are now available in over 8,000 retail stores across the United States, including major chains like Kroger, Publix, Whole Foods, and Walmart. This expansion involves more than 30,000 points of distribution nationwide.
