Art Institute Features 'Project a Black Planet'

The Art Institute of Chicago is currently hosting "Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica." The high-profile exhibition explores themes of diasporic identity, culture, and history, drawing attention from the city's philanthropic and business communities.

- This is the first major exhibition to survey the cultural expressions of Pan-Africanism, featuring approximately 350 objects from the 1920s to the present. - The exhibition is a major international collaboration, co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, in partnership with KANAL-Centre Pompidou in Brussels and the Barbican Centre in London. - Prominent Chicago-based artist Kerry James Marshall is featured, with works like "Africa Restored (Cheryl as Cleopatra)" included in the exhibition. - Major financial support for the exhibition comes from notable Chicago figures and foundations, including The Chauncey and Marion Deering McCormick Family Foundation, Anita Blanchard and Martin Nesbitt, and the Lewis and Susan Manilow Fund. - The curatorial team includes Antawan I. Byrd, an associate curator at the Art Institute and assistant professor at Northwestern University, and Adom Getachew, a professor at the University of Chicago, highlighting a strong local academic underpinning. - Beyond fine art, the exhibition includes a significant collection of books, magazines, record albums, and other ephemera to show how Pan-Africanist ideas were circulated globally. - The exhibition is structured around three key 20th-century Pan-Africanist movements: Garveyism, Négritude, and Quilombismo, offering distinct visions of a "Black Planet". - After its run in Chicago from December 15, 2024, to March 30, 2025, the exhibition is scheduled to tour the collaborating institutions in Europe until the spring of 2027.
