Indonesia Finalizes BrahMos Missile Deal with India

Indonesia and India have finalized a deal for the sale of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. The defense agreement marks a significant strategic military and economic partnership between the two nations.

The deal is reportedly valued at around $450 million and would mark Indonesia as the second Southeast Asian nation to acquire the BrahMos system after the Philippines. The Philippines secured a $375 million deal in 2022 for three batteries of the shore-based, anti-ship variant of the missile. The BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile developed as a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya. The name itself is a portmanteau of two rivers: the Brahmaputra in India and the Moskva in Russia. India holds a 50.5% stake in the joint venture, BrahMos Aerospace, with Russia holding the remaining 49.5%. Traveling at speeds of Mach 2.8, the BrahMos is one of the fastest cruise missiles in the world. It operates on a "fire and forget" principle and can be launched from land, sea, and air. The missile's high speed gives targets less time to react and its kinetic energy on impact results in significant destructive power. This agreement is a significant step towards India's goal of reaching ₹50,000 crore (approximately $5.9 billion) in annual defense exports by 2029-30. India's defense exports have seen substantial growth, reaching a record ₹23,622 crore (about $2.8 billion) in the 2024-2025 financial year. The acquisition of the BrahMos missile system is expected to bolster Indonesia's coastal defense capabilities. The two nations elevated their relationship to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" in 2018, and this deal deepens their defense and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. Both India and Indonesia conduct regular joint military exercises such as "Garuda Shakti" between their armies and "Samudra Shakti" between their navies. This missile deal further solidifies the strategic alignment and interoperability between the armed forces of the two maritime neighbors.
