Tech Giants Form Alliance for AI-RAN

The Linux Foundation has announced a new foundation to accelerate open-source AI-Radio Access Network (AI-RAN) development, with backing from industry leaders like NVIDIA, AMD, Ericsson, and Nokia. The move comes as LITEON showcased its AI-RAN tech integrated with NVIDIA's platform at MWC 2026.

The AI-RAN Alliance, officially launched at MWC 2024, aims to integrate artificial intelligence into cellular technology to advance radio access networks (RAN). Founding members include tech giants like Amazon Web Services, Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Samsung, and major telecom operators such as SoftBank and T-Mobile. The alliance has since grown to over 130 members, a significant increase from its initial 11 founders, signaling strong industry momentum. This collaboration is focused on three core areas: using AI to enhance RAN capabilities for better spectral efficiency ("AI for RAN"), integrating AI and RAN processes for new revenue opportunities ("AI and RAN"), and deploying AI services directly on the network edge ("AI on RAN"). The ultimate goal is to improve network performance, reduce power consumption, and retrofit existing infrastructure, paving the way for 5G and 6G advancements. The initiative addresses the inefficiency of current RAN architectures by promoting open, software-defined platforms. By fostering an open-source environment, the alliance aims to ensure transparency and interoperability, preventing vendor lock-in and accelerating innovation. This shift is critical for handling the complex network demands of future technologies like autonomous vehicles and advanced IoT. NVIDIA's involvement is central, providing the GPU-accelerated hardware and software, like its AI Aerial platform, that are foundational to these new AI-native networks. At MWC 2026, LITEON demonstrated its AI-RAN technology running on NVIDIA's platform, showcasing scalable solutions that reduce integration complexity for faster deployment. This collaboration with partners like Supermicro and SynaXG enables real-time analytics and intelligent network optimization at the edge.
