LayerZero Airdrop Strategy Guide Circulates Widely
A detailed guide for the highly anticipated LayerZero ($ZRO) airdrop is making the rounds, driving on-chain activity. The playbook advises users to engage with LayerZero's native bridge alternatives and ecosystem dApps to maximize their allocation for what is expected to be a major cross-chain infrastructure token launch.
LayerZero Labs, the entity behind the interoperability protocol, has raised a total of $318 million, achieving a $3 billion valuation in its Series B funding round in April 2023. The firm is backed by a syndicate of top-tier investors including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Sequoia Capital, Binance Labs, Circle Ventures, and Christie's. The protocol functions as a generic messaging layer, enabling decentralized applications to communicate across different blockchains without relying on centralized bridges, which were responsible for $1.4 billion in exploits in 2022 alone. Co-founders Bryan Pellegrino and Ryan Zarick aim to create a unified ecosystem, comparing their vision to the internet's role in connecting fragmented data centers. The initial airdrop snapshot was completed on May 1, 2024, with the claim process beginning in June 2024. The LayerZero Foundation identified 1.28 million eligible wallets out of over six million unique addresses that have interacted with the protocol. The ZRO token has a total supply of 1 billion, with 38.3% allocated to users, developers, and community members. The initial distribution on day one made 8.5% of the total supply available for eligible participants, with the remainder of the community allocation reserved for future programs. To claim the tokens, eligible users are required to donate $0.10 in USDC, USDT, or ETH per ZRO to the Protocol Guild, a funding collective for Ethereum core developers. This "proof-of-donation" mechanism could result in up to $18.5 million in funding for Ethereum's core infrastructure. LayerZero has been actively combating Sybil attacks, where single users create multiple wallets to farm airdrops. CEO Bryan Pellegrino noted that approximately one million of the six million wallets that used the protocol were identified as being involved in such activities. The protocol's V2, which went live on mainnet in January 2024, introduced Decentralized Verification Networks (DVNs), replacing the previous oracle model and allowing for more modular and customizable security. This upgrade aims to give developers greater control over their application's security and execution. Future distributions are planned, with 15.3% of the total ZRO supply reserved for users, protocols, and builders through subsequent snapshots and other methods. The team has signaled that these future airdrops will focus on rewarding genuine, sustained protocol usage.
