Claude Dethrones ChatGPT in App Stores

Anthropic's Claude AI has officially overtaken ChatGPT as the most downloaded AI app in the U.S. on both Apple and Google's app stores. The shift signals intensifying competition in the consumer AI space, with Claude's rise attributed to its user experience and a focus on safety and transparency.

The surge in Claude's popularity saw its U.S. downloads increase by 240% month-over-month in February, according to app intelligence firm Appfigures. Data from another firm, Similarweb, showed Claude's daily active users on mobile jumped 26% to an average of 9.4 million for the week ending March 2, reaching a record 11.3 million on that day. This shift in user preference appears linked to public debate over the role of AI in defense. The download spike for Claude coincided with scrutiny of OpenAI's deal with the Pentagon, while Anthropic reportedly resisted requests to loosen safeguards for military applications of its technology. The app store battle reflects a larger market rivalry backed by immense capital. In February 2026, Anthropic raised $30 billion at a $380 billion valuation. That same month, OpenAI announced a blockbuster $110 billion funding round, valuing the company at $840 billion with backing from SoftBank, Nvidia, and Amazon. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, including CEO Dario Amodei and President Daniela Amodei. The company was established as a public benefit corporation with a focus on AI safety, a principle its founders felt they could better pursue outside of OpenAI. The two companies pursue different market strategies. OpenAI has focused on massive consumer scale, achieving over 900 million weekly active users for ChatGPT. Anthropic has prioritized an enterprise-first model, targeting high-compliance and regulated industries with a "Constitutional AI" approach that emphasizes safety. On the product side, users have noted the Claude app has a more personable, concierge-like feel compared to ChatGPT's interface. A key feature differentiator is that Claude's free mobile tier allows users to analyze images, a capability not available to unpaid ChatGPT users. While Claude now leads in new downloads, OpenAI's ChatGPT maintains a much larger base of roughly 248.8 million daily active users. However, the reversal in download rankings is the first of its kind and signals a significant shift in a consumer AI landscape long dominated by OpenAI.
