Vector Institute to Host AI Conference in Toronto

The Vector Institute is hosting its third annual "Remarkable" conference in Toronto on February 19-20. The two-day event will showcase the latest developments in AI, industry innovations, and cutting-edge research. The conference aims to highlight Canada's position in the global AI landscape by bringing together researchers, industry leaders, and emerging talent.

- The Vector Institute is a key partner in the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy, a pioneering national program first launched in 2017 to establish Canada as a global leader in AI. The strategy's second phase focuses on commercialization and the development and adoption of AI-related standards, supported by an $8.6 million investment from 2021-2026. - In June 2023, the institute released its "AI Trust & Safety Principles," built upon the OECD's ethical AI framework. These principles are designed to guide Canadian and international organizations in the responsible development and deployment of AI systems, covering areas like democratic values, privacy, security, and accountability. - The institute actively participates in global AI governance discussions through collaborations with the World Economic Forum's AI Governance working group and the AI Safety and Technology Technical working group. It contributes to shaping principles and standards for the safe and responsible use of AI. - Geoffrey Hinton, known as the "Godfather of AI," is a co-founder and the Chief Scientific Advisor for the Vector Institute. Hinton, a 2024 Nobel laureate in Physics and a recipient of the A.M. Turing Award, has been instrumental in the breakthroughs in deep learning that have come out of his Toronto research group. - The institute is one of Canada's three national AI institutes, along with Mila in Montreal and Amii in Edmonton, which are central hubs in Canada's AI ecosystem. These institutes are tasked with translating AI research into commercial applications. - Vector maintains strong ties with industry through founding and sustained sponsorships with major corporations. These partnerships facilitate the adoption of AI, provide companies with access to researchers and AI talent, and have contributed to over $1 billion in AI and tech-related investments since 2017. - In January 2026, the Vector Institute deepened its partnership with Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) to help AI innovators protect and commercialize their intellectual property, an initiative that runs through March 2027. - Canada is advancing its regulatory framework for AI with the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), which is part of Bill C-27. The government is also developing a specific AI strategy for the public service, focusing on building an AI-ready workforce and implementing tools for responsible AI adoption.
