Chicago's Chinatown Celebrates Lunar New Year

Chicago's Chinatown hosted its Lunar New Year celebration today, marking the Year of the Horse with traditional festivities. The event, put on by the Chinatown Community Foundation, is part of a larger effort to preserve and promote the neighborhood's cultural heritage.

The parade travels north on Wentworth Avenue, starting at 24th Street and culminating at the viewing stand at Cermak and Wentworth. This annual procession features traditional dragon and lion dancers, ornate floats, and local marching bands. 2026 marks the Year of the Fire Horse, a rare combination in the 60-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The Horse symbolizes vitality, independence, and forward momentum, while the Fire element adds intensity, passion, and rapid change. Culturally, the Year of the Horse is seen as a time for decisive action and progress. Chicago's current Chinatown, centered on Cermak and Wentworth, was established around 1912. The original late 19th-century settlement was located in the Loop near Clark and Van Buren streets, but residents and businesses were pushed south by rising rents and discrimination. The On Leong Chinese Merchants Association was instrumental in the community's relocation, commissioning a new building on Cermak Road that served as a hub with stores, apartments, and community space. This move allowed the community to establish a more permanent and spacious enclave. Beyond the Lunar New Year parade, the Chinatown Community Foundation organizes other major cultural events. These include the annual Dragon Boat Race for Literacy and a Summer Fair that attracts over 40,000 attendees, highlighting the neighborhood's year-round vibrancy. Such cultural celebrations serve as a vital economic engine for the neighborhood, which faced significant declines in foot traffic and business during the COVID-19 pandemic. Events that draw large crowds are crucial for the continued recovery and sustainability of local shops and restaurants.
